Yesterday, we witnessed the return of Doctor Who, featuring the Doctor, as played by Matt Smith, and his new saucy companion, Clara "Oswin" Oswald, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. A lot can be said about this episode, but overall, I enjoyed it. It wasn't as tear jerking as I initially believed it would be seeing as it was written by the notorious Steven Moffat AKA "the Rory Killer." The following paragraphs will feature spoilers of the episode, which happened to show a lot of continuity between earlier episodes and how Clara turns into Oswin and even showed what I believe to be the main villain of the season. It didn't say what its true identity is but this not so old villain is of great intelligence. Oops, spoilers.
In the episode “The Bells of Saint John,” people were dying and their souls were sucked into their own Wi-Fi. Not exactly the Terminator future I had in mind but I knew the computers would turn on us sooner or later. Clara, who at the moment is computer illiterate, had to call tech support to see what was wrong with the internet (she forgot to turn on the Wi-Fi…). And who did she get for help? Of course she got the Doctor, who was living as a monk in the year 1207 at the time.
After Clara said those familiar words, “Run you clever boy and remember,” the Doctor immediately had to go find her. Putting on his signature suit and, of course, bow-tie, because well, they’re cool, the Doctor attempted to find Clara only to see that she is, surprise, surprise, dead. But her soul wasn’t fully integrated into the internet, the Doctor managed to save her. However, as she returned from the internet, she gained incredible hacking skills, skills equal to that of Oswin Oswald, who was able to hack into Dalek technology. He then went after those who are taking the souls of people but as a result lost Clara’s after he left her alone for a moment.
Ultimately he managed to save Clara, as well as those who have been victims of this incident, but before they could find out who was pulling the strings, who was only known as “the client” throughout the episode, his human resources soon had their memory erased and the last thing they remembered was their life before “the client” took over their minds. This included the head employer in charge, a middle aged woman named Kizlet who reverted back to being a child, mentally, as the client, later revealed to be the Great Intelligence from the previous episode, “The Snowmen,” had been in her head since she was a mere child just waiting for her parents.
I personally liked this episode as it explained quite a few things… but at the time made me question about fifty more things. But hey, that’s Doctor Who for you. What is the Great Intelligence and what exactly is its main goal? Now according to the Doctor Who wiki page, it is an “Old One”, an ancient race that existed before this universe right now and was also a previous villain in the classic Doctor Who series for the Second Doctor. Will we be seeing more Old Ones like the Great Intelligence? Is there going to be an invasion in this universe by the previous one? I certainly look forward to seeing more to finding out.
