Driving back to Long Island from a play date with my daughter and some friends in my old Queens, NY stomping grounds on a Saturday night. It's getting late, traffic is light, it's dark on the road and my eight year-old's beautiful blue eyes are starting to droop. Now anyone with kids can tell you that one of the most dreaded things that a parent will ever have to face with their child...is the power nap. No matter how beat she is, Meghan can conk out for an hour or two...and be ready to party all night long. Well it had been a long day for daddy too...and I gotta tell ya I just wasn't in a "party all night" kinda mode.
So now I have to figure out HOW to keep her awake for almost an HOUR. Open the windows? Nope......don't want her to get sick. The radio? Naaaah....she's a New Yorker and has no problem sleeping with background noise. Oh wait...I know...start a conversation that I know she'll be in the mood for. And in Meghan's case that's usually a pretty easy solution....so I ask her what she thinks about the WWE Night of Champions Pay Per View. What adorable, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little eight year old girl wants to talk about professional wrestling you might ask? Well clearly you haven't met my daughter.
I have been an avid fan of the squared-circle since I was just nine or ten years old...still waiting for my thank you from Vince for over 30 years of loyal viewership too by the way, but that's a story for another time. Lol. Anyway, I am thrilled to report that since she first learned to walk, talk and say John Cena (it's always about the kids wit him isn't it?), my daughter has grown into as big a fan as her daddy. And while you might not expect the first Pay Per View after Summerslam to have much to offer, I think it has the potential (on paper anyway) to be really good. Worth a look at the very least.
Here is how Meg and I see the things turning out.....
Antonio Cesaro (champion) vs ???
(United States Championship)
The current United States (and self-proclaimed European) Champion will be facing the winner of a YouTube-exclusive pre-show Battle Royal. Based on the events of Smackdown the Friday before the PPV it looks like it will be Brodus Clay. Although you could make a case for Santio to continue to chase the title that Cesaro took from him.
Donald Says: Cesaro needs a good feud and this could be the start of one. Regardless of his opponent I say he holds onto the gold...for now.
Meghan Says: Brodus Clay wins the battle royal AND the title (My daughter is a big fan of the Funkasaurus apparently)
The Miz (Champ) vs Cody Rhodes vs Rey Mysterio vs Sin Cara
(Fatal 4-Way for the Intercontinental Championship)
Call me crazy, but I have a feeling that this match could be one of the best of the night. Two former world champions, three solid workers, and one lucha legend (despite his issues in a WWE ring) should make for some great action. Personally I think that Rey and Cara are just in there to hit some spots and build a fued one day down the line, while the real focus of the I.C. title picture is Cody and Miz.
Donald Says: The WWE seems to be ready to give Cody Rhodes the push to the next level, and winning the title could be a stepping stone......Cody Rhodes is the new champ.
Meghan Says: Rey...because he is always the smallest guy in almost every match but still finds a way to win.
Layla (Champion) vs. Katlyn
(Divas Championship)
I still think that the Divas division has some strong talent in it, and I wish Triple H and/or the powers that be would focus it the right way and use these women more to the best of their abilities. But for now, even though she isn't even in the match, I still believe that the company is high on Eve and will figure out a way to get the strap on her soon enough.
Donald Says: Layla retains and starts a feud tonight with Eve for a match at Hell in a Cell.
Meghan Says: Kaitlyn (just because....I told you she was tired)
Kofi Kingston & R-Truth (champions) vs Kane and Daniel Bryan
(Tag Team Championship)
Rather than give us another D-Bry and Kane one-on-one match, we get them together as a team. This is a stroke of genius as the chemistry between "Team Frienship" is undeniable. Kane gets a resurgence in his career, Daniel Bryan continues to be the best all around performer in the company (in my opinion) and the two former world champions help breathe new life into the rebuilding tag team division.
Donald Says: Team Anger Management continues to argue and fight with each other.....as your NEW Tag Team Champions.
Meghan Says: Kofi and Truth with then match....and Daniel Bryan and Kane just continue to fight and argue with each other.
Sheamus (champion) vs Alberto Del Rio
(World Heavyweight Championship)
In the beginning I kept asking myself WHY the WWE kept putting Alberto in title matches. I just wasn't getting it...but I do now. He has great chemistry with Sheamus and their clashing styles (Irish brawler vs ring technician) definitely works. Sheamus' "lawsuit" vignettes have been really entertaining as well.
Donald Says: Even with the Brogue kick banned, I think Sheamus finds a way to win. Especially with the debut of his new submission move, the cloverleaf.
Meghan Says: Daddy and daughter agree on this one...Sheamus beats "Bertie" with the Cloverleaf.
CM Punk (champion) vs, John Cena
(WWE Championship)
As a fan of the industry for as long as I have been, it is hard to be truly blown away by something these days. But the confrontation between Punk and Cena on the go-home episode of Monday Night RAW (with Bret Hart) definitely did it. Consider the promo both men cut, under the dark cloud and uncertainty of the Jerry Lawler incident, and it is easy to see why the Cena and Punk fued just doesn't get old.
Donald Says: In his hometown, after more than 300 belt-less days, the stage is set for John Cena to finally win back the WWE title....but he won't. Punk is an excellent heel and will be an even better one with Paul Heyman on one side and the title on the other...the "best in the world" continues his title reign.
Meghan Says: Find me a kid who picks against John Cena....Meg says that it takes BOTH an STFU and an A.A......but John Cena becomes the new WWE Champion!
Dolph Ziggler vs Randy Orton
I almost forgot about this match. No disrespect to either man, but it IS called Night of Champions, right? I am actually not complaining at all. I like both superstars inside the ring and expect it to be a really good match.
Donald Says: I think the Ziggler era is about to begin. Will he cash in his money in the bank contract earler in the night and face Orton for the World title? Your guess is as good as mine. Either way it should be a solid match and a huge win over the viper is a great boost to Dolph's blooming career.
Meghan Says: Orton with an RKO.....now LET ME SLEEP (lol.....well at least I got her through the whole conversation).
Enjoy the Show Wrestling Fans!!!
