Inside The Huddle: Previews and Predictions for All of the Games Going on Around the NFL in week 9!
by Donald "Duckie" McDermott
New Orleans Saints at New York Jets
X’s and O’s: The Jets have a pattern where they win one week, then lose the next. Following that pattern, they are due for a win this week. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t expect Drew Brees and the Saints' high-powered offense to come to town looking to follow those same guidelines.
Duckie’s Luckies: Saints go marching out with the W.
Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers
X’s and O’s: The banged up Falcons continue to struggle, and at 2-5 every game is a must win right now if they hope for any chance at the playoffs. Cam Newton and The Panthers meanwhile, seem to be picking up steam at just the right point in the season.
Duckie’s Luckies: Falcons get mauled by the big cats.
Minnesota Vikings at Dallas Cowboys
X’s and O’s: Both teams are coming off tough losses a week ago. The Vikings have decided to put newly acquired QB Josh Freeman on the bench for this one, starting Christian Ponder under center. Dallas has struggled on defense, but their offense is one of the best in the league.
Duckie’s Luckies: Cowboys conquer Vikings at home.
Tennessee Titans at St. Louis Rams
X’s and O’s: Not sure if there is such a thing as moral victories in the NFL. But if there are, the Rams definitely had one last Monday night with an impressive defensive effort in their loss to the Seahawks. Following three straight losses to elite opponents, the Titans hope to get back on track and in the win column in St. Louis.
Duckie’s Luckies: Titans get “rammed” on the road.
Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills
X’s and O’s: After wining only two games all of last season, the impressive Chiefs are looking to get to a perfect 9-0 this season. Bills QB Thad Lewis could be kept on the sidelines with sore ribs, in which case Buffalo would have to start undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel or the recently signed Matt Flynn.
Duckie’s Luckies: Chiefs stay perfect in a big way.
San Diego Chargers at Washington Redskins
X’s and O’s: Philip Rivers' has been performing like one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL as of late. And at 4-3, the Chargers are setting their sights on a wildcard spot in the playoffs. The Redskins on the other hand, continue to struggle on both sides of the ball after a 2-5 start.
Duckie’s Luckies: Skins get zapped by the Bolts
Philadelphia Eagles at Oakland Raiders
X’s and O’s: The Raiders are coming off a big win at home a week ago against Pittsburgh. A win that was capped by two rushing TD’s from Darren McFadden and a 93-yard TD run from quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Thanks in part to their instability at quarterback, the Eagles are having trouble producing any offense at all after a hot start.
Duckie’s Luckies: Raiders continue to get better out west
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Seattle Seahawks
X’s and O’s: The 7-1 Seahawks were nearly upset by the Rams on Monday Night. This week they will be without starting receivers Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin. Lucky for them they will be at home against the winless Bucs and one of the league’s worst offenses.
Duckie’s Luckies: Seahawks soar at home.
Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns
X’s and O’s: The Ravens roll into Cleveland coming off their bye week and desperately trying to avoid suffering a third straight loss. Baltimore has not lost to Cleveland since November of 2007. Ravens QB Joe Flacco is 11-0 versus Cleveland, throwing for 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Duckie’s Luckies: Ravens squeak out a big road win.
Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots
X’s and O’s: As a life-long Steelers fan, this has been a rough year to watch. Pittsburgh finally won two in a row, then lost a heartbreaker to the Raiders last week. And with the Pats and Packers up next, it doesn’t look to get better anytime soon. Brady & Co. sit atop the the AFC East at 6-2.
Duckie’s Luckies: Steelers’ long year keeps getting worse.
Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans
X’s and O’s: The Colts travel to division rival Houston in an attempt to end the Texans’ hopes of a third straight division title. Unfortunately, they will be doing it without star wideout Reggie Wayne, who was lost for the season due to injury. Case Keenum, will make his second straight start in place of a healthy Matt Schaub.
Duckie’s Luckies: Colts ride out of Houston with the victory.
Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears
X’s and O’s: Including the NFC championship game during the 2010 season, Green Bay has won six in a row against Chicago, and five straight meetings at Lambeau. The Bears will have to try and keep it from being seven straight without its two leaders, Jay Cutler and Lance Briggs.
Duckie’s Luckies: Packers tame the Bears in a close one.
