Inside The Huddle: Previews and Predictions for All of the Games Going on Around the NFL in week 4!
by Donald "Duckie" McDermott
Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills
X’s and O’s: The Bills offense struggled in week 3 against the Jets defense. I don’t expect things to get much easier for Buffalo this week when they face the always stingy Ravens D. Baltimore is coming off a big bounce back win against their AFC conference rival Houstan Texans. They should also receive a boost on offense from the return of all pro running back Ray Rice.
Duckie’s Luckies: Quote the Raven….Bad day for the Bills.
Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns
X’s and O’s: Cleveland is coming off a shocking road win in Minnesota last week, despite losing running back Trent Richardson in a trade and starting quarterback Brandon Weeden to injury leading up to the game. This week they host a division rival and very tough Bengals team. The Bengals have won 7 of their last 9 meetings with the Browns.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Browns get mauled at home.
Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions
X’s and O’s: Led by a hungry, opportunistic defense, the 3-0 Bears travel to Detroit to take on their 2-1 division rivals in one of the best match-ups of the week. The Bears have won 9 of their last 10 meetings with the Lions, causing 27 turnovers in the process. The Lions expect to have Reggie Bush back for the game, but will be without injured starting wide receiver Nate Burleson.
Duckie’s Luckies: Lions won’t be able to “bear” the Chicago defense.
New York Giants at Kansas City Chiefs
X’s and O’s: The Giants are 0-3 and desperately need a win after a humiliating 38-0 loss to the Panthers a week ago. The Chiefs are one of the hottest teams in the league under new head coach Andy Reid and new starting QB Alex Smith. The Chiefs are barely allowing 300 yards of offense per game, while Giants QB Eli Manning was sacked 7 times last week and has thrown 8 interceptions in his first three games.
Duckie’s Luckies: Chiefs stay unbeaten. Giants stay beaten.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs Minnesota Vikings
X’s and O’s: The Steelers and Vikings travel across the pond for the NFL’s annual game in merry old England where both teams will be searching for their first win of the season. Big Ben threw for 400 yards, half of them to Antonio Brown, and got TE Heath Miller back in last week’s loss to the Bears. The Vikings are coming off a terrible home loss to a Browns team without its starting quarterback and running back.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Men of Steel leave London with their first W.
Arizona Cardinals at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
X’s and O’s: Bucs coach Greg Schiano finds himself on the hot seat and quarterback Josh Freeman lost his starting job to rookie Mike Glennon after a disappointing 0-3 start to the season. To add injury to insult, Tampa wideout Vincent Jackson, is a game time decision with a rib injury. Cards QB Carson Palmer's 72.3 passer rating is 26th in the NFL for a Cardinals offense that ranks 23rd in the league.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Cards D makes it a rough day for the rookie QB.
Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars
X’s and O’s: The Colts are coming off a huge 27-7 road win over the San Fransisco 49ers in week 3. Once seen as a pass first team behind quarterback Andrew Luck, Indy is starting to run the ball with power, thanks to the combination of Ahmad Bradshaw and newly acquired running back Trent Richardson. The Jags meanwhile, continue to look like the worst team in the NFL.
Duckie’s Luckies: Colts ride out of Florida with the win.
Seattle Seahawks at Houston Texans
X’s and O’s: At 3-0, the Seahawks look like the cream of the crop in the NFC right now. The Texans are coming off a tough loss to the Baltimore Ravens in week 3. Coach Pete Carroll has the Seahawks defense ranked first in the league, and one win away from the franchise’s first-ever 4-0 start. The Texans are at home and come into the game featuring the league’s second ranked defense.
Duckie’s Luckies: Seahawks remain undefeated in a defensive struggle.
New York Jets at Tennessee Titans
X’s and O’s: Rookie quarterback Geno Smith has surprised critics and fans across the NFL by leading the Jets to a 2-1 record after 3 games. The Titans are also a surprising 2-1. These two very similar teams both feature the AFC’s top running backs in Chris Johnson and Bilal Powell. What’s more, they have been two of the most penalized teams in the NFL so far.
Duckie’s Luckies: Jets squeak out a close win on the road.
Philadelphia Eagles at Denver Broncos
X’s and O’s: Peyton Manning has thrown for more than 1,100 yards and 12 TDs through his first three games. The bigger number? ZERO interceptions in that span. The Broncos are looking for their franchise best 15th straight regular season win dating bacl to October 7, 2012. Michael Vick is off to a great start so far as well, and Eagle LeSean McCoy leads the league with 395 yards rushing.
Duckie’s Luckies: Eagles get grounded as Broncos gallop to 4-0.
Washington Redskins at Oakland Raiders
X’s and O’s: The 0-3 Redskins fly out west in search of their first win of the season against a banged up Oakland Raiders team. RG III has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards in three games, but some folks are still wondering if he is the same dynamic player that he was in his rookie season. A solid game against a Raiders teams that surrendered 536 yards of total offense last Monday night would be a good start at hushing his critics.
Duckie’s Luckies: Oakland gets scalped at home.
Dallas Cowboys at San Diego Chargers
X’s and O’s: Having a tough time figuring these two teams out. One week they look dominant, the next week they struggle. Even without star linebacker Anthony Spencer, the Cowboys will take the field at Qualcomm stadium on Sunday with an NFL best 11 sacks. The Chargers will surely be playing with heavy hearts after this week's suicide of Paul Oliver, who played safety for San Diego from 2007-11.
Duckie’s Luckies: An emotionally “charged” win for San Diego
New England Patriots at Atlanta Falcons
X’s and O’s: Last week the Falcons lost a close one to the AFC East’s Miami Dolphins. This week they face another AFC East team in Tom Brady & Co. The 3-0 Pats are averaging just under 20 points per game. Atlanta running back Steven Jackson misses his second straight game with a bad hamstring, while receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones are both listed as questionable due to injuries.
Duckie’s Luckies: Home field makes the difference as the Falcons soar to victory.
Miami Dolphins at New Orleans Saints
X’s and O’s: Someone goes home with their first loss as the surprising 3-0 Dolphins head to the Superdome to take on Drew Brees and the Saints. Miami QB Ryan Tannehill has completed 66.4 percent of his passes and scored TDs in seven of his eight red-zone trips this season. Brees is coming off a week in which he threw for 3 TDs and 342 passing yards.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Saints go marchin’ to 4-0.
