Inside The Huddle: Previews and Predictions for All of the Games Going on Around the NFL in week 3!
by Donald "Duckie" McDermott
Green Bay Packers at Cincinnati Bengals
X’s and O’s: Both the Packers and Bengals found their running games in week 2, but don’t be fooled. I still expect a good old fashioned shoot-out when the Pack rolls into Cincy on Sunday. Aaron Rodgers is flying high, coming off a 480 yard, 4 touchdown performance against the Washington Redskins a week ago. Andy Dalton is solid, but not in Rodgers’ league yet.
Duckie’s Luckies: Bengals fall to the Pack attack
New York Giants at Carolina Panthers
X’s and O’s: The Giants are one of several teams that fans are surprised to see sitting at 0-2. A big reason why is that Big Blue is averaging 5 turnovers per game. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they go into Carolina as the underdogs this week. No team wants to start the season losing their first three games. And if there is a game for Eli and Co. to bounce back it should be this one.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Giants get back on track in Carolina
Cleveland Browns at Minnesota Vikings
X’s and O’s: The Vikings have to be excited about this one. They need a win bad and the Browns shocked a lot of fans this week by trading away their best player, running back Trent Richardson. They will also be starting their third string QB after starter Brandon Weeden suffered an injury in week 2. After two tough losses to division rivals, this is the perfect game for Minnesota to right the ship.
Duckie’s Luckies: Expect the Vikings to conquer the lowly Browns.
Buffalo Bills at the New York Jets
X’s and O’s: These teams match up pretty well. Both feature solid defenses, 1 - 1 records, and rookie starting quarterbacks. I have to say that my first instinct is to take the Bills. They seem like they might have just a little bit more to prove. But the Jets are at home and I really think that home field advantage could make a big difference in this one.
Duckie’s Luckies: Jets squeak out a win with a late field goal.
Detroit Lions at Washington Redskins
X’s and O’s: The Redskins are yet another 0-2 team that are desperate for a win. Unfortunately for Skins fans (my brother and dad included), I don’t think this is the week they get it. The Redskins are trying to keep RG III from running too much after recovering from an injury last season. The problem with that is that he is NOT a pocket passer, and sitting in the backfield against a big, fast Lions front seven could prove dangerous.
Duckie’s Luckies: When it’s over, they can change his name to RG 0 and III.
San Diego Chargers at Tennessee Titans
X’s and O’s: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers comes to Tennessee with 614 passing yards and 7 TDs in the first two weeks of the season. He also brings the league’s top receiver in Eddie Royal as San Diego goes for its 10th straight win over the Titans. Tennessee signal caller Jake Locker may be able to land some big plays against the Chargers, who have allowed an NFL-high 375.5 passing yards per game so far.
Duckie’s Luckies: Chargers keep their winning streak going in Tennessee.
St. Louis Rams at Dallas Cowboys
X’s and O’s: Cowboys and the Rams in Dallas seems like a no-brainer, right? Not so fast. The Rams are an up and coming team with a hungry coach in Jeff Fisher who wants to win now. The Cowboys were lucky the Giants turned the ball over so many times in week one. Then they lost to an up and coming Chiefs team with a hungry coach in week two.
Duckie’s Luckies: Rams pull off the surprise of the week in Big D.
Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens
X’s and O’s: The Texans kick off a tough three-week stretch with a road game against a hurting Baltimore Ravens team that likely won't have Ray Rice on Sunday. So far neither of these two teams have looked like the AFC powerhouses of old. The Texans are 2-0 but needed second half rallies to win both of those games. They also may be traveling into Baltimore without their star receiver Andre Johnson.
Duckie’s Luckies: Home field advantage gets the Ravens a close win.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New England Patriots
X’s and O’s: The Bucs have lost two very close games in weeks one and two. The Patriots on the other hand are 2-0, despite missing a LOT of their biggest weapons on offense. I am sooooo tempted to think that the Bucs can pull one out here. The only problem is, aside from being at home, the Patriots still have the two “Bs,” Brady and Bellichick. That combination always makes them dangerous.
Duckie’s Luckies: At the whistle, the Pats are 3-0, the Bucs are 0-3.
Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints
X’s and O’s: Carson Palmer has found a second wind in his career so far and the Cardinals got their first home win last week. I am as happy for coach Bruce Arians as anyone can be. But now they face a tough challenge on the road against Drew Brees, returned coach Sean Payton and the 2-0 Saints. The deciding factor in this one is whether or not Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald is ready to go after a hamstring injury in week 2.
Duckie’s Luckies: Saints clip the birds in a shootout
Atlanta Falcons at Miami Dolphins
X’s and O’s: When I first saw this game on the schedule I thought the Falcons would win it easy. That was before Ryan Tannehill and the 2-0 Dolphins started playing like they were for real. It was also before the banged-up Falcons lost some of their best players for the game, including receiver Roddy White and newly acquired running back Steven Jackson….now it’s a little tougher to call.
Duckie’s Luckies: Falcons fly out of Miami with a close win
Indianapolis Colts at San Francisco 49ers
X’s and O’s: The Colts travel to the bay area to take on a 49ers team that HAS GOT to be looking for some redemption after a 29-3 beating last week at the hands of their division rival Seattle Seahawks. The Colts will unveil newly acquired running back Trent Richardson this week. Unfortunately, they will come to town with the same offensive line that has let Andrew Luck take a beating in the first two weeks of the season.
Duckie’s Luckies: Niners ride the Colts to a victory at home.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Seattle Seahawks
X’s and O’s: I don’t think the real question here is whether or not the Jaguars will win this game, but rather will the Jaguars win ANY games this season? They are clearly the worst team in the league right now, and their best player, running back Maurice Jones Drew suffered a tendon injury last week against the Raiders. Seattle is also fired up after a BIG week 2 victory over the division rival 49ers.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Jags get declawed bad in Seattle.
Chicago Bears at Pittsburgh Steelers
X’s and O’s: My favorite team is in some serious trouble at the moment. The 0-2 Steelers welcome the Bears, who come in with a 2-0 record, a swarming defense, a solid running game, a franchise quarterback and a dangerous receiving corp. In any other match-up I would be all over the Bears. But I have to believe my guys from the Steel City will avoid starting the season at 0-3.
Duckie’s Luckies: Steelers find a way to tame the Bears on Sunday night.
Oakland Raiders at Denver Broncos
X’s and O’s: Peyton Manning’s nine TD’s and 131.0 QB rating through two games lead the league. But Manning will be without Left Tackle Ryan Clady for the rest of the season, arguably Manning’s most important teammate out on the field. The Raiders will try hard to get at Peyton, but he should still have enough in the tank to beat a rebuilding Raiders team. Duckie’s Luckies: Broncos gallop to a 3-0 record.
