Inside The Huddle: Previews and Predictions for All of the Games Going on Around the NFL in week 1!
by Donald "Duckie" McDermott
New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills
X’s and O’s: The Patriots go into the 2013 season without offensive names like Wes Welker, Aaron Hernandez and Danny Woodhead. Not to mention that TE Rob Gronkowski will miss this game with an injury and the Bills always play their division rival pretty tough. Tom Brady & Co. should still have enough weapons to come away with the win.
Duckie’s Luckies: Patriots march to a 1-0 record.
Cincinnati Bengals at Chicago Bears
X’s and O’s: The Bears will look to make a statement as they open their season at home with a brand new head coach. Fresh off HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series, the Bengals come to town with a tough defense that now includes former Steelers linebacker and one-time Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison as they try to keep Chicago from its fourth opening day W.
Duckie’s Luckies: Bengals claw their way to victory
Miami Dolphins at Cleveland Browns
X’s and O’s: Both the Dolphins and Browns come into this game with a second year quarterback who will try to end his team’s playoff drought. On paper, the Dolphins look to be the more capable team. Especially after a busy offseason that included the addition of wideout Mike Wallace. The offseason also saw Cleveland bring in a new offensive coordinator in Norv Turner, while the defense changed from a 4-3 to a 3-4.
Duckie’s Luckies: Dolphins in a close one
Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions
X’s and O’s: Adrian Peterson returned from injury in 2012 to come nine yards from Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record. The Vikes brought in receiver Greg Jennings from Green Bay and first round draft pick Cordarrelle Patterson. Calvin “Megatron” Johnson is coming off a record setting season in Detroit. Unfortunately, the Lions finished under .500 for the 11th time in the past 12 seasons.
Duckie’s Luckies: Vikings tame the Lions
Oakland Raiders at Indianapolis Colts
X’s and O’s: While the Colts look to open the season with a seventh consecutive home victory, the Raiders try to record their first winning record in 11 years. Indy went from 2-14 two seasons ago to becoming a playoff team with a rookie sensation at QB. This season they will battle The Texans for the lead in the AFC South. The Raiders on the other hand, are still trying to figure out who their starting quarterback will be.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Colts in a Blowout
Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints
X’s and O’s: The battle for the NFC South begins in week 1 when the reigning division champs fly into the Superdome. The Saints look to bounce back from a 7-9 record a season ago with the return of coach Sean Payton. New Orleans is 10-2 against the Falcons with Payton and Brees together. Is the addition of running back Stephen Jackson enough to get Atlanta to the next level?
Duckie’s Luckies: Falcons in a shootout
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New York Jets
X’s and O’s: The Jets are a team with a long road ahead of them. They open the season with a rookie starting Quarterback in Geno Smith. Not because he won the job, but because starter Marc Sanchez is down with a shoulder injury. Another bad season could cost Rex Ryan his job as Jets head coach. On the other side of the field, former Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis will be licking his chops against his old team.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Jets crash and burn in game one
Tennessee Titans at Pittsburgh Steelers
X’s and O’s: The Steelers look to avenge an 8-8 season, despite entering week one with questions on their offensive line, in their passing attack, running game and on defense. They'll face a Titans defense that hopes to be much improved after bringing in former New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Tennessee also made improvements on the offensive line to help protect QB Jack Locker.
Duckie’s Luckies: Pittsburgh “steels” one in the season opener
Seattle Seahawks at Carolina Panthers
X’s and O’s: Despite becoming a much improved team in 2012, The Seahawks look to win their first road opener since 2006. Seattle adds explosive wide receiver Percy Harvin to an already talented core that includes 2nd year QB Russell Wilson and running back Marshawn Lynch. Carolina signal caller Cam Newton has 62 touchdowns and 7,920 yards in his first two NFL seasons, but is only 13-19 as a starter.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Seahawks fly high in Carolina
Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars
X’s and O’s: The Chiefs responded to their disappointing 2-14 record in 2012 by bringing in a brand new coach in Andy Reid, a brand new quarterback in ex-49er Alex Smith, and signed all-pro receiver Dwayne Bowe to a long-term contract. The Jags start the season without second-year wide receiver Justin Blackmon, who was suspended for the first four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Duckie’s Luckies: The Jaguars get declawed against KC
Arizona Cardinals at St. Louis Rams
X’s and O’s: The Rams start the season without running back Stephen Jackson for the first time since 2004. They do however, start with newly signed tight end Jared Cook and offensive tackle Jake Long to help quarterback Sam Bradford. The Cardinals come into St. Louis with a new outlook fueled by new coach Bruce Arians, new quarterback Carson Palmer, and new running back Rashard Mendenhall.
Duckie’s Luckies: When in doubt, go with the home team…Rams
in a tough one.
Green Bay Packers at San Franciso 49ers
X’s and O’s: Could this be a preview of this year’s NFC championship game? The runners-up from the Super Bowl enter the new season with a chip on their shoulder and newly signed receiver Anquan Boldin on their offense. The Packers still have plenty of weapons to make them dangerous. They have lost some players too, including receiver Greg Jennings and defensive back Charles Woodson.
Duckie’s Luckies: Hard to pick against the reigning NFC Champs at home…Niners it is.
New York Giants vs Dallas Cowboys
X’s and O’s: The first clash of the year between the two storied NFC East franchises is always worth watching. The G-men lost five of their last 8 games a season ago to miss the playoffs after winning the Super Bowl the year before. The Cowboys come into the new season with high expectations, despite not making the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.
Duckie’s Luckies: Eli Manning continues to shine in Big D.
Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins
X’s and O’s: It wasn't clear until very recently who would start the opener at quarterback for either of these NFC East rivals. While Eagles QB Michael Vick had to win the job in the preseason, 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III waited for the OK from doctors to step back on the field again.
Duckie’s Luckies: RG III and the skins spoil Chip Kelly’s coaching debut.
Houston Texans at San Diego Chargers
X’s and O’s: Expectations are high in Houston, where fans are more than ready for them to take that next step to the Super Bowl. Helping them in their journey this season will be returning linebacker and 2009 Defensive Rookie of the Year Brian Cushing. The Chargers kick off the first Monday Night Football of the year with a new offensive system under first year coach Mike McCoy.
Duckie’s Luckies: Texans stop the charge on Monday Night.
