A Life Worth Weighting For - June 20th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
"The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want."
- Ben Stein
Really hard to believe that it is just about the end of June already. Where did this month go? For that matter, where did this year go? In a few short days it will officially be summer. Meghan will be out of school. The days are going to get even hotter. My runs are going to get even more difficult. Not looking forward to that at all. But it is what it is. I will deal with it. Some people (my old trainer included) will tell you that the more difficult the task, the more meaningful the benefit. That certainly makes sense…I guess. Lol. Well today was a nice day at least. Sunny, upper 70’s, not too humid. Low humidity is always a good thing. I am doing fine in my little weight loss/fitness journey. I am certainly better than I was in the days when I weighed over 400 pounds. But I don’t think I will ever be built for the heat. Give me a nice, cool fall day anytime thank you very much.
Oh well, heat or no heat…humidity or no humidity…I stepped out for my run this morning like I always do now. Since I am alternating my distance this week, and yesterday was a four-mile day, that meant I only had to endure three miles today. I recently mentioned to a good friend of mine that I am jogging at least three miles every single day now. His response was “how is that even possible?” I don’t think he meant it as a shot at my ability really. I think it was more about his own limitations. He weighs less than me and is a lot younger than me. Yet admittedly, he can’t run from his front door to the corner of his block without stopping. Hey, everyone is different. Maybe if I was 20 again I wouldn’t think that I needed to run anywhere. For me though, it is all about staying committed and breaking down barriers. Metaphorically of course. No one expects you to run through an actual wall.
I have been doing this every single day for like two months now. And I find that I still have trouble in my first mile. In fact, the first half-mile is really tough for me. That is when I have those little inner battles with myself. “It’s too hot out.” “A mile is fine, you don’t have to do three.” “Wow this is harder than usual today.” That is what is going on in my head during the first few minutes of my run almost every single day. But then I find that in the LAST half-mile of my run I am totally fine. Sweating yeah. But not struggling. Not even breathing heavy. Not having any of those annoying little inner battles. The point to me there is that I would never know that good feeling of finishing my third mile really strong if I didn’t push myself to keep going after that first one. It is always easier to quit than it is to push on. But I’ve also learned the hard way that just because it is the easy way doesn’t mean that it’s the right one. Run, baby, run.
Until tomorrow!
