A Life Worth Weighting For - March 20th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
Music has always played a huge part in my life. In fact, whether I am walking, jogging, exercising, on a train or just riding in a car I usually have my ipod with me. At the very least a radio is going somewhere in the background. When all is said and done one day I think we will all look back and realize that we had a pretty cool “soundtrack” to our life. And of course everyone’s is different. For me, there are times when out of nowhere I will hear a song that was on when I did something years before…and immediately it takes me back…as if I was there all over again. I love that about good music. And from classic rock to today’s pop……from country and jazz to the blues…..from movie soundtracks and musicals to the cheesiest of 80’s tunes….
….there is pretty much something I like in every genre. And what triggered this little musical medley down memory lane? Well one of my favorite bands of all time is the Eagles. My dad introduced them to me when I was little, their greatest hits album was the very first CD I ever owned, and my friends and I have sung so many of their songs in bars, at barbecues and during parties over the decades that I have lost count. If that isn’t enough of a reason for them to be special to me, in 1994 when they had their big “Hell Freezes Over” reunion tour, I was there in Giants Stadium. Going crazy with 70,000 other people. Two of those people were my brother and my best friend Matt.
All these years later, Matt is gone from our lives (but never forgotten – R.I.P), but the memories of that night in Giants Stadium, rockin’ out to Take It Easy, Hotel California, Take it to the Limit and countless others, can never be taken away from me. So this blog of mine isn’t JUST about health and fitness. Sometimes it’s just about whatever is going on. For me, lately it has been the Eagles History special. It’s a great look back at how the band got together, the times they had, the troubles they dealt with, the break-up, the reunion and some seriously great music in between. It’s on cable a LOT and coming out on DVD soon. I highly recommend it. As for me, it’s time to head down to the man cave for a little workout. And what will be playing in the background to keep me motivated? Why the music of the Eagles of course.
Until tomorrow!
