Want to try something difficult first thing on Saturday? How about this. Get your daughter out of bed on a nippy morning at 9am and try to get her to walk two miles. Then watch the hilarity ensue. Okay, so there was no hilarity there. Trust me…none. Meghan was NOT a happy camper at all today. And being a McDermott through and through, she was VERY vocal about no being happy. But this has been our routine for the past few Saturdays now. Getting up and out early, and joining a few other parents and their kids for a walk around a local Ecology Center. The routine got stalled for a little while with all of the snow we got out here in L.I. But we started up again today, much to my daughter’s chagrin.

Now I tried to explain to her that this was something we both needed…and that she would look back on times like this when she was older…and believe it or not, she would thank me (and her mom) for making her get herself moving. Oddly enough, reasoning and logic just doesn’t work that well on a disgruntled 9 year old. Who would have guessed? Well it wasn’t easy, I will admit. I was pulling her by the front of her coat at the 1.5 mile mark and almost literally pushing her across the finish line at the end…a black cloud over her head and steam coming out of her little red ears. We were the last ones to be done…but she did it. After she left with her mom, I went back and slowly jogged another lap.

I ended my own little near three mile jaunt with an uphill hike. Because it’s always about finishing stronger than you started…and I definitely did today. Then for the rest of the day I helped a friend move some furniture AND drove all over Manhattan working my night job. It was a very productive – YAAAAWWWWNNN – and very tiring day. On a positive note, being so busy and keeping so active all day long left little room to be tempted by the bad foods that we all know and love so well. Saturdays can be tough sometimes that way. So I am really tired and about to crash out. Still in the fight though, ready for whatever tomorrow brings. Hope you are having a productive weekend as well.
