A Life Worth Weighting For - Day Six by Donald McDermott

February 23rd, 2013

Wow, just like that and it’s day six already. One of the definite perks of being a busy person in general is that it definitely makes the time go by faster. Looking forward to getting my first full week on this brand new journey under my belt (my soon to be shrinking belt to be exact). What I am NOT quite looking forward to however, is stepping on the scale on Monday morning. No need to get myself all crazy just yet though. Still another full day to get through. So instead let us focus on the positive, shall we? And by that I mean lets talk about the Saturday that just was. All around, aside from the weather (rainy and cold – hello, it’s February!), I am happy to report that it was a really really good day.

First and foremost, because most Saturdays are spent with my daughter Meghan. Call me an old softy (not that old), but daddy-Meggy days as I have come to call them over the past nine years, are my FAVORITE! We are together other times during the week of course, but Saturdays are different. It’s the weekend, man! No work…..no school….just me and her. Ya gotta love it! Making today even MORE enjoyable than your usual Saturday, was the fact that Meg and I got to spend it celebrating a birthday with some of my favorite people in the world. Seeing old friends for the right reasons is always cool to me. Seeing our kids play together is even cooler. So hi again to Kitty, Smokey, Paulette, John, Kenny, and Janie.

The meetings are never often enough anymore, but the pleasure is always mine. A very special thank you to Crystal for inviting us to her daughter’s fourth birthday too. Your little ones are beyond adorable. Meghan can’t get enough of either of them…and Happy Birthday again to Danielle! So a great time was had by all today. Both with me and Meg, and with some of my oldest and dearest peeps. But no day is without its challenges. When you are just starting out on the road to getting healthier, sooner or later you are going to find yourself outside your comfort zone where food is concerned…and you are going to come face to face with having to make the right choices all on your own. That’s where I found myself today.

For the party I thought ahead. I am pretty much ALWAYS late. I tell people I was born a month early….and have been late for everything since. Sorry to all of those I have kept waiting over the years. And by those, I mean…pretty much EVERYONE. Lol. So Meg and I left the house late, and I was fairly sure by the time we got to the party the pizza, hero, and other goodies would be put away. I was right, so that was one early temptation averted. I have never been a “sweets guy” either, so the cake and cupcakes were not an issue for me. Meghan was another story. She can write her own blog though, this one’s all mine. After the party I surprised my mom with a visit from her granddaughter, which was pretty cool.

It was getting late when we said goodbye to my mom, so Meg and I swung by a diner for dinner. And as the leather bound, 8-page (I counted for dramatic effect when I wrote this), double-sided menu hit the table in front of me with a pretty good THUD…I thought maaaaaybe I had bitten off more than I could chew today….so to speak. You will be happy to know that I was good. First off, I asked them not to put bread out on the table. Meghan was NOT amused. But I have a serious love affair with carbs…and that was a temptation I did not need. Instead I went old school, and ordered a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. Not the best thing on the menu for me, but not the worst by a long shot…and the croutons gave me a little bread fix too.

What can I tell ya, no one is perfect. BUT….I am getting better. Hope you’re all enjoying your weekend so far. Until tomorrow!
