A Life Worth Weighting For - Day Five by Donald McDermott

February 22nd, 2013

Ouch, ouch, OUCH…as a favorite person of mine would always say. On day number two this week I believe it was, I came to the conclusion that a sure-fire way to tell that you have officially started eating less, and eating healthier, is that you suddenly realize for the first time in awhile that you are hungry. And if you will notice, I try to always say things like eating better or being healthier. I kinda hate the word DIET….it is one of the worst of all the four letter words to me. I know that some people might see it as inspirational. I’m on a DIET….CHAAAARGE! Well good for those folks. I just don’t roll that way. So I try never to use the “D” word. I also tend to shy away from the word “lifestyle change.” To me that suggests a whooooole different kinda commitment that I don’t think I will ever be ready for. Not that there’s anything wrong with that….lol.

But anyway, I prefer to just say that I am getting healthier. Which is surely what I am doing. And now lets go back to my original point (my train of thought rolls off the tracks a lot…please bear with me). So if being hungry is a sure sign that your eating habits have changed for the better all of a sudden, then a sure-fire sign that you have started exercising again….is that you are in PAIN. Hence…ouch, ouch, OUCH! It has definitely been too long, that’s for sure. And I haven’t done anything drastic this week either. Just getting’ myself movin’ again. Before Meghan got home from school today I noticed that we needed a few little things from the store. And since there is no such thing as a “run to the corner” here in the middle of nowheresville…I decided to walk. Just a quick little challenge to hustle to and from the store…probably a mile and a half or so total…before the bus pulled up to drop my little girl off.

I made it back in plenty of time of course. The fear of your child getting off the bus to discover an empty house is definitely a great motivator. Walking is an excellent form of exercise by the way. It is easy, free and absolutely anyone can do it. Other than that I have been doing some stretching and light cardio while I ease back into the swing of things again. I have made sure to do SOMETHING every day so far though. Healthy eating and exercise go hand in hand. I’ll never get where I want to be if I am only doing one of the two. Well maybe I will, but it will take forever, and none of us has that kind of time or patience. But it’s Friday and that means my very first week back in the saddle is getting closer to being behind me. It also means that I am one day closer to my very first weigh in. I must say I am both excited and terrified at the same time. I think that’s probably a good sign

Little steps lead to big changes…
