A Life Worth Weighting For - May 18th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

This morning started off with a little bit of frustration. As you know, I am trying to run between 2 and 2.5 miles each and every day. And by “run” I mean that I am not walking. To most people it’s probably not “running” either. The important thing is that whatever it is…it isn’t “sitting.” On Saturdays, my amazing little girl Meghan and I head over to the local ecology center, where their paths and trails span about a mile all the way around. Well Meg’s mom was supposed to meet us this morning so that she and Meg could walk while I went for my daily jog. She bailed on us at zero hour…and she also had Meghan’s sneakers with her…oy. Well my daughter is a trooper all the way. Even in open-toed flats she still walked a mile with me. I was very proud of her…and we celebrated in typical fashion….by heading over to the playground for a little fun time.
I have to say I was bummed about missing my first run in about three weeks. Nothing I can do about it though. It was too busy of day to sit and dwell on what I couldn’t control. After getting home to shower and change, Meg and I packed a cooler, some sandwiches and snacks for lunch, and headed my trusty mini-van into queens. The indy promotion that we here at callingallnerds really love following is called Pro Wrestling Syndicate. They usually put on shows out in Jersey every month. But today they were in my old Queens stomping grounds…only about a mile from where I grew up actually. So we saved a lot of time AND gas money…and went to the show with my fellow C.A.N.s cohorts, Jesse and Cody. We also reserved a table for the very first time. Got a chance to promote our site and sell some wrestling merch for our friend John the Doorman and his Flushing store, Who’s on First?
It was cool to bypass the line out front when we got there to set up. And as the night went on we got the chance to see some great matches, meet some really cool people (not to mention some seriously dedicated wrestling fans), and even sold a few things. But for me the highlight of the night is always Meghan. My daughter is turning 10 in a few months, but no one told her that. She firmly believes she is an adult…and a very social one at that. She is so much more confident than I ever was at her age…and I love watching it. She walked around talking to people. Helped us set up the table, handed out flyers and business cards, the whole nine yards. She also fell asleep about a minute after we got on the Grand Central headed home after all was said and done. Definitely a day that I won’t forget anytime soon. I can certainly use more of those lately.
And since I spent the bulk of my day at a live wrestling event, I think it is only fitting that I wish a special happy birthday to the late, great Andre the Giant. At 7 feet 4 inches tall and more than 500 pounds, Andre was bigger than life. Without even realizing the date, I let Meghan wear her Princess Bride t-shirt with Andre’s picture on it to the show today….nice.
Until tomorrow!
