A Life Worth Weighting For - May 11th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

“The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.”

                                                                   - A Bronx Tale

Funny thing about the rain. I think that in general, most people don’t care for it. Most of the time I am right there with them. Life is complicated enough just trying to run from place to place every day without having to worry about doing it soaking wet. There is a small part of me that likes the rain though….and here’s why. A few years back I weighed more than 400 pounds. Now I know what you’re going to say. How could someone SO devistatingly handsome have ever weighed that much? I know, I know, it’s a mystery to me too. Ha ha ha ha. Well all jokes aside, that happens to be true. I dropped a whooole lot of weight with the help of a dedicated trainer and friend. This person, lets call him Jonathan (because that’s his name), well he believes whole-heartedly in the power of running.

He told me from day one that if exercise is a tool, then running is your sledgehammer. And for my money there has been no better tool to chip away all of the unwanted pounds. So one day I show up to Jonathan’s for my regular workout. All of those workouts started and ended with a mile run at Juniper Park in Queens. This one particular day it happened to be raining…hard. I remember foolishly asking him “it’s raining out, what’s that mean?” He replied “means you’re gonna get wet.” Lol. I remember being more than a little aggravated about his snarky comment at the time. But while we were on our run, the skies pouring down on us, he reminded me that there is also something important to remember about running in the rain, the snow, the blistering heat or whatever Mother Nature might bring.

They are obstacles. They make the battles harder, but never impossible. They also tend to make the victories that much sweeter. So while most people dread the rain, I tend to welcome it. Mostly on running days. I remembered all of that today while I was pushing myself up and down Fire Avenue…which I had all to myself by the way. That’s another thing that the rain does for me. It reminds me that anyone can walk or jog when the sun is shining. But it takes something special to get out there when the elements are against you. So Mother Nature threw a little something at me today. I took it and kept on going. I pushed myself to do 2.5 miles. Burned off 360 calories according to the endomondo app on my phone. That leaves me with another 2.5 miles to do tomorrow to reach my goal of 15 for the week. I definitely like my odds. Especially if it is raining out.

By the way, two quick shout-outs before signing off. Happy 43rd wedding anniversary to my mom and dad. And a special congratulations to my cousin Meghan (the original) on her wedding day. Wishing you nothing but the best for the years to come!!!

Until tomorrow!
