A Life Worth Weighting For - May 5th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

“Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

                               - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

Okay, so here is the set-up. Last Monday I made a personal challenge. In my head of course. People tend to look at you funny when you talk to yourself out loud in public. Anyway, the distance from my house to the local school and then back again is just about a mile and a half. I have been wanting to run more, so I challenged myself to run a total of ten miles this week between Monday and Sunday…today. I made sure to get in my daily run every day this past week…and on Friday I had logged in 7.5 miles altogether. That left me two days to do the remaining 2.5 miles and hit my goal. No sweat right…piece of cake (that of course I won’t eat). Ahhhh ha, but because I was with Meghan yesterday I never got to actually “RUN.” I walked a mile and a half with her, played two games of softball, practiced for over an hour and then went out for a full night of work.

That should count for something, right? Okay…fine….count it for something….but that’s not what the challenge was. That left me with three options at first glance. One – count the walk as a run…which would have me at nine miles for the week and only one to go on Sundday to hit my goal. Two – Do my usual mile and a half for the day today and not worry about the rest. I will be at nine miles total, which is JUST short of my goal. But with all of the other stuff I did this weekend surely no one would think any less of me, right? Three – suck it up, jog the two and a half miles and hit my goal. Mind you I am on NO sleep and BOTH my legs are sore. Would you like to guess which one I opted for? Well I won’t even pretend it was easy. And I am guessing it suuuuure didn’t look pretty. But I did my usual mile and a half to the school and back, then circled around and did it AGAIN.

I totalled out at 3 miles….which not only reached my goal of ten…but topped it off at 10.5. I hafta say, even with no one to celebrate with in my big empty house, I was still really proud of myself. The difference between settling for nine and pushing to ten and a half might not seem like much to you. But it was enough to keep me smiling through another looooooong night of deliveries. Here is something else you might not hear me say a whole lot…but I am actually looking FORWARD to seeing that scale tomorrow morning. I have worked had this week and am expecting a hard fought victory for my efforts. I’m also looking forward to setting some new goals. We can talk about that tomorrow though. For now, what I am looking forward to most is sleep. I believe I’ve earned it. Hope you had a great weekend. Mine was a bit of a blur….but I am not complaining.

Until tomorrow!

P.S. – Happy 8th Birthday to our neighbor and buddy, Bryan Pedreira….hope your day
