A Life Worth Weighting For - April 29th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.”

                                  - Oscar Wilde

On Saturday morning, Meghan and I proudly crossed the finish line together at the 5K walk at the Bronx Zoo. When it was done, we walked along all of the displays that were set up near the DJ booth. A lot of companies where there offering free food and drinks. We grabbed some apples, oranges, bottles of water and yogurt (thanks to everyone that supplied it). At the end of the line was a jumbo display of bagels and mini-muffins….really? Of course, being the carb loving McDermott that she is, Meghan put the orange in her pocket and reached for a bagel. Before her hand got there I told her she couldn’t have one. She started to react the same way most nine-year olds would when they are told they can’t have something.

Before it went too far, I simply asked her why she would want to put in all of the work in walking three miles, just to sabatoge it by eating something that was bad for her. Oddly enough, that seems to get through to her and she dropped the bagel tirade…for now…lol.  Hey, it was a small battle…but they are all important ones. Especially when the stakes are so high and the prize (Meghan) is such a valuable one. Anyway, looking back I suppose you could call me a hypocrite, because I kinda did the same thing I told her NOT to do. Not with a bagel mind you…but I do feel like I put in a good week of work at meals and when it comes to exercising…just to mess it up right before my weigh-in today.

First off, I was told a long time ago that while we sleep the body produces and enzyme that helps to break down fat. So if you’re not sleeping enough, you’re not giving your body the time it needs to get this done. Well on Friday night I got three hours sleep after deliveries. Then on Saturday night after deliveries, you guessed it, three hours. Needless to say that after a weekend that consisted of the 5K walk, hours of softball practice, two games, walking all over Belmont Park and more, I was struggling to stay awake while I was out working on Sunday night. Throughout the course of the evening I ended up pounding down not one….not two….but THREE Monster Energy drinks.

They don’t tast good at all really…and they are PURE sugar….but the work still needed to get done and I was SHOT. So I did what I had to do. No excuses here. Got on the scale this morning, after about 4 or so hours of sleep…and didn’t lose a thing. Between a weekend of nooooo sleep and a night of sugar shock I am kinda glad to not have gained anything. I’m getting right back in the saddle again starting today though. Starting with a good, long, well earned and much needed night’s sleep. If you need me tonight, please don’t call. I am putting the big Do Not Disturb sign on my door and plan to be out of commission til morning….at LEAST! Have a good night all….thanks for checkin’ in.
