A Life Worth Weighting For - April 27th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

                 - Doubt kills more dreams than failure.

Today was a reeeeeaaaallly good day! A tiring and busy one, but still really really good. And for a few different reasons. My amazing 9 year-old daughter Meghan and I started our beautiful spring Saturday by traveling in to a 5K walk at the Bronx Zoo. I did this event last year with two friends from work. I was proud then that I was able to jog the whole thing without stopping (a 5K is 3.2 miles for anyone that doesn’t know). Well today I am even more proud because even though I opted for walking instead of running, I got to do it with Meghan. Daddy-Meggy time is my favorite. Whenever we get to do something together that is both meaningful AND memorable it is that much more special. There were some doubts at first (not from me) that Meg could handle walking three miles when sometimes it is tough to motivate her to walk all the way to the car.

BUT…this was different. This time we took our time, strolling through endless looks at lions, tigers, bears (OH MY!) and an an array of other live animals. We stopped by the monkey cages, walked through the reptile house and even had a peacock cross the road right in front of us. When all was said and done, between the walk itself and us having to travel from one end of the park to the other to get back to our car, I would say that Meghan and I walked close to four miles on Saturday morning. I have a picture of the two of us right in front of the finish line that I am definitely going to treasure forever. I was so proud of her…and of myself too for that matter. After dropping Meggy with her mom for the rest of the day, I went home with just enough time to make something light for lunch and change.

Then it was off to two hours work of softball practice, followed by two actual games. HOOO BOY! We got beat pretty bad in both games. What can ya do? It was just one of those days…I guess. Lol. Fun and definitely humbling. But better than sitting home on the couch any day of the week. Have you heard the term “no rest for the weary?” Well not only have I heard it, but I get to live it on almost a daily basis. In this case that meant that after the 5K walk, the two hour practice and two games of softball, I got to drive into the city and do my second job til the wee hours of the morning. I have absolutely no idea how my eyes are still open. The sun is coming up…my head is nodding down….lol. Like I said, an exhausting day all around, but a productive and gratifying one as well. And now….good night.
