A Life Worth Weighting For - April 19th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
Oh my goodness! Is it….can it really be? YEEESSSS…it’s FRIDAY!!! Part of me can’t believe it is already here…another part of me was afraid that it was never going to get here. Obviously there’s a bit of a disagreement going on inside of me…lol. This really has been a crazy week. Even crazier is that it’s not over yet! I started today off with a little head-butting session with Meghan. Nothing bad…they have to test you once in awhile…it’s just not what you want to be doing at 8am on a Friday morning. What is it about kids that make them believe they know more than you? Well at least it’ll pass right? I mean dealing with her as a teenager in a few years is only going to get easier I’m sure. Ha ha ha ha….someone find me a padded room now please. Once I got back from dropping the Megmonster off at school, I decided to clear my head with a jog.
Again I got myself to crank out just over a mile. I am glad that I am running again, because I know that is the best thing for me. I am DEFINITELY going to increase the number of miles starting bright and early on Monday. Just before I get on the scale of course. After settling on cereal and a yogurt for breakfast (honey nut cheerios and strawberry yogurt in case you were wondering), I cranked out another solid day of work on the computer here in my home office. And just a random observation here. I really didn’t think I would like working from home when it was first proposed to me…and it is a constant struggle to not park myself RIGHT in front of the refrigerator every day. BUT…I really am starting to enjoy it. I have more free time, I am close by in case Meghan ever needs me, and not having to deal with the endless commute into and out of the city on the LIRR alone brings me mental benefits every single day.
Not much else to tell as far as today goes. In fact, “work” and “Meghan” is generally the same answer you will get from me whenever the question is “so what did you do today?” Tonight our local church held it’s annual spring missions banquet. Lots of people, lots of food, lots of fun. I am a big believer in keeping family, friends and community together…especially where Megs is concerned. So nights like tonight are always pretty cool in my eyes. FYI…I made sure to stay away from the trays of food with the pastas, sauces and cheeses in em….and I stuck to the chicken, veggies and salad. It was a party, yeah, but I can be good and still enjoy myself. Meghan and some of the other kids performed…which personally I can’t get enough of. Mostly because I never had the guts to do that when I was her age. They also had a bunch of guest speakers from other churches drop by.
The coolest was an older pastor and his wife, both dressed in full biker gear. He with a bald head and long, grey ZZ Top style beard. The patch on their back said “Bikers for Christ.” When he spoke, he told us that they don’t just preach in church….they go to some of those places that most people won’t ever want to go….to try and save the worst of the worst. Because they are the ones who need it the most. He said…and I quote…”anyone can stand in church, but it takes a special person to be willing to ride right into the gates of hell.” Now come on…whether you are into the whole church thing or not…you gotta admit, THAT was pretty cool. Got home a little on the late side, and Meghan was old cold as soon as she hit the pillow. I think I am going to follow her lead….just don’t tell her that…lol. It has been a truly long week and I am wiped OUT!
Until tomorrow!
