A Life Worth Weighting For - April 17th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

Today is one of those special feeling kinda days for me. Why you ask? Well isn’t that nice of you. Today is special because my dad, Donald “Mac” McDermott (yes, I am a junior) celebrates his 62nd birthday. Let me tell you, this week at work so far has been nothing short of hellacious. And I don’t see it slowing down until the week comes to an end….maybe not even then. So taking personal time during working hours this week seemed pretty much impossible. BUT…it’s still my dad…and it’s still his birthday. So at lunchtime I drove into Queens and took my dad to lunch for his birthday. He was off today and I felt bad about the idea that he would be spending his special day alone. We went to…you guessed it…Cronins. Mike (the owner) really should be paying me for all of this publicity I give him. At least a free meal once in a while…SOMETHING….lol.

I have been on a total seafood kick lately and the grilled salmon at Cronins ROCKS! So that’s what I went with for lunch. Salmon with a baked potato and homemade turnips…an unsweetened iced-T on the side, while my dad sat across from me and knocked back a few adult birthday beverages. Hey, it’s HIS dad after all. Had a good time and he looked genuinely happy when I dropped him off. Happy Birthday dad. A few years back I told him that I couldn’t believe he was turning 60. He responded without hesitation, “yeah, but I’ll always be cool.” He was right then…and it still holds up now. For me unfortunately, the day was just beginning. Took me FOREVER to get home. The L.I.E. is a parking lot all day and most of the night during the week. Barrelled thruough my front door with just enough time to get some work done and then run out to my weekly parenting class at the church.

It was okay tonight…just okay. So weeks are less inspiring than others. But I’ll never learn if I don’t go. Being there also means that I get to see my beautiful little girl Meghan for a little while too…that alone makes the trip worth it. Got back to the house at around 9 o’clock. Made myself a quick sandwich and a caesar salad for dinner. Normally I wouldn’t eat dinner so late….but it had been a long day and I never got the chance before then. After that it was right back to work on the computer to catch up on the stuff I missed out on during the day. Just took a quick break to bang out my blog for you fine folks…and now it is back to the grind. I have a pot of tea boilin’ as I type this. My eyes are starting to droop and I still hve sooooo much to do before the sun comes up. Gonna to be a long night. Wish me luck!

Happy Birthday Again to the Biggest Kid I Know!!!

Until tomorrow!
