A Life Worth Weighting For - April 16th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

Just got home after a looooong trip all the way from Brooklyn to Queens, then back to my home base here at the tail end of Long Island. My brother, some call him John Paul (cuz that’s his name), others call him Ned (cuz that’s his nickname). But whatever you call him, he surprised me with a ticket to see two of my old school favorites in concert tonight. Joe Walsh was the opening act. Bob Seger was the headliner. If you know who these two men are then be jealous…lol. If you don’t know who they are, then shame on you. Go look them up online immediately. For nearly four decades now, Joe Walsh has been one of the featured guitarists for The Eagles. He has also done plenty more on his own before, after and in-between. Now my dad was a child of the 60’s…

…and a fan of all of the music that went along with it. When I was growing up and other people were discovering legendary guitar players like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, my dad’s money was on Carlos Santana…and Joe Walsh. Joe was always the man to me because of that, and tonight he definitely didn’t disappoint. Bob Seger, for me at least, is a classic piece of American music history. Just like Joe, he has been performing since the 70’s. His songs tell stories about growing up, having fun, living and learning about life. He is in his 60’s now but has not lost his voice at all. I am a TOTAL sucker for sappy old love songs. Seger’s tune “We’ve Got Tonight” is one of my all-time favorites. It was AWESOME tonight! Quick little side note too, we saw the show at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

REEEEEEAAAAAALLLY nice place. Totally state of the art. Easy to get to by train as well….highly recommend. So brother Ned and I got there nice and early, since we were traveling there for the first time and didn’t want to be late. There is a “mini-mall” right across the street where the two of us grabbed dinner at Applebees. Not the greatest service and a wee bit pricey if you ask me. HOWEVER…total surprise….Applebees has a LOT of healthier options on their menu. Some of their meals even have Weight Watchers calores and point totals. Way to go guys! So I got to stay good (grilled chicken with steamed veggies) AND enjoy a great live show to boot. Thanks Sluggo for hookin’ me up. Took me forever to get home. But with a crazy work week ahead it was much needed and definitely worth it.

Until tomorrow!
