A Life Worth Weighting For - April 13th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
So it would seem that all of my worrying was for nothing. And just for the record…it wasn’t all THAT much worrying. But I will admit that I was definitely a little bit nervous about playing in my first organized league softball game in many, many moons. We got a LOT of rain out here in my little corner of Suffolk County on Friday though, and as it turns out the field that we were set to play on got flooded…and our game for tonight was cancelled. There was a part of me that was kind of relieved…and a part of my that was kind of bummed out at the same time. Oh well, there’s always next week. Regardless, I still tried to make it a great and productive day. Since my separation I am trying hard to make every day that kind of day. It was also Saturday…and what I lovingly call “a Daddy-Meggy” day…my favorite kind of day EVER.
Meg and I started out the day by offering a helping hand to our local church. They were collecting volunteers to help with a house that needed to be torn apart and renovated over in Port Jefferson just a few miles from here. Meg decided to sign the two of us up. This is also how I came to be put on the softball team too, by the way. My life has gotten a lot more hectic…..and a lot more interesting…since my daughter learned how to write my name. LOL. It was cool though. I am generally the kind of person that likes to help. Turned out to be a good bonding moment for us…and a fulfilling experience for me. And much to my daughter’s chagrin, once we were done helping out, I drove us straight over to the Holtzville Zoo and Ecology Center for our regular Saturday morning walk. I guess since it was around noon by then, Megs thought she had gotten out of our walk…she was incorrect. I got her to walk a mile around the Center…barely…but I will take it.
I also had to allow for some playtime in the park right after…but of course I was cool with that too. By the time we got back to the house it was time for a late lunch and we were both starving. Meghan requested grilled cheese…nice and simple. And because I believe presentation is as important as taste in any meal…I also made her a small caesar salad (she loves crutons!) and put some sliced strawberries on the side with it. She doesn’t like to compliment me that much…a kid thing I am guessin. Definitely a McDermott thing…but she ate everything but the plate…so I took that as a compliment. All in all a real good, well rounded day. I can hear Meghan sleeping in the next room as I type this. We did some other running around too and she was wiped by the end of the night. I am glad I didn’t have to drag her to my game tonight…as much as I wanted her to see her daddy play. There’s always next week though…another great Daddy-Meggy day is always right around the corner. Hope your Saturday was a great one….g’nite!
Until tomorrow!
