A Life Worth Weighting For - April 11th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
Day number fifty two….one of my all time favorite numbers. As a RABID fan of the NFL…specifically the Pittsburgh Steelers….number 52 always reminds me of a guy named Mike Webster. He might not mean much to you…but he is someone I have always looked up to. A classic tale of someone who played bigger than he really was, “Iron Mike” was a center in the NFL. That’s the guy who hikes the ball to the quarterback, for any non-football fans that might be reading this. It is one of the most important, yet most under-appreciated roles in football. Well when he was drafted by my beloved Steelers way back in 1974….
….Mike Webster was seen as undersized. Critics said he was too little for his position….he would never make it in the NFL….NO fanfare like today’s draft picks get. Well his luckily his coaches didn’t listen to any of the critics or nay-sayers. Neither did Mike Webster himself. Instead he gave 110% every time he walked out on the field. And when all was said and done he had been a major part of four super bowl championships. The Steelers are recognized as the team of the 1970’s…and he was a big part of the reason why. Nowadays Mike Webster’s plaque is in the hall of fame….the highest honor a player in the NFL can aspire to when is career is over.
He is not only recognized as one of the greatest Steelers of all time, but one of the greatest players of all time. Not bad for a guy that they said would never make it in the first place, huh? Sadly, Mike Webster’s life ended tragically at way too young an age. BUT….his picture is on my wall in the man cave…a constant reminder of what can be accomplished with plenty of hard work and determination. No matter what people might say about you or put in front of you. So I humbly offer a toast to Mike Webster….the greatest 52 of them all.I will try hard to make the most out of this day and live up to his very lofty standards.
Until tomorrow!
