A Life Worth Weighting For - April 9th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

For me, Tuesdays have sorta become “family day” lately. More specifically, they have become “mom and dad” day. My parents live in Queens. I live an hour away in Medford, NY. Medford….that’s M-e-d-f-o-r-d. I know, I had never heard of it before I moved here either. But anyway, I have mentioned before that my mom is in a rehab center that I am sorry to say she will probably spend the rest of her life in. A truly sad example of what happens to a person who has no fight left in them anymore. Well I try to get into the old neighborhood and see my mom once or twice a week. Tuesday has become one of those days for two reasons. One, because Meghan is with her mom on Tuesdays. And two, because my dad is off from work on Tuesdays. So I get to see both parents in one visit.

And today being a wonderfully surprising 80 degrees, the three of us got to sit outside for a change. After putting mom back in her room, kissing her goodbye and heading out, dad and I went out to dinner together. Also becoming a weekly tradition for us that I really like. Without even discussing it we head right over to Cronins, an Irish Pub in Astoria filled with really good people and really great food. Yes we go there a lot. No we don’t want to try anywhere else. We are a simple folk, what can I tell ya? The past week or two, the salmon at Cronins has been the BOMB. It’s what I was thinkin’ about when I walked in. BUT…the specials menu advertised a broiled filet of sole stuffed with crabmeat…and it sounded too good to pass up. They served it with a HUGE baked potato that was too big for even me to finish, along with a mix of cauliflower and carrots…YUM!

Dad had the beef stew. Which is really good too if you ever find yourself there and it is on the menu. I’m just sayin. We walked to my car after dinner…totally full and probably in need of a much longer walk. Dad put his arm around me in sort of a half-hug/back pat, told me to “get home safe and all that” (that’s a direct quote), and he kept on walking towards the apartment on 43rd Street that I grew up in. It was about as affectionate as he allows himself to get…but I will take it. I got home with enough time to call Meggy, tell her I love her and wish my little girl a good night. Then, to cap off what was a pretty good spring day, I went for a jog. Nice and easy…slow and steady…logged in two miles. And now, feeling relaxed and satisfied, it’s time to get a good night’s sleep. Gnite all…..hope it was a good day for you too.

Until tomorrow!
