A Life Worth Weighting For - April 5th, 2013 by Donald McDermott

It may be just another part of the spring to you. To most people honestly. But I have to say that this is one of my favorite times of year. Better than my birthday. Better than New Year’s and St. Paddy’s Day. The time of year I am referring to is WrestleMania Weekend! I’ve been a wrestling fan since I was about 9 years old. I watched the very first WrestleMania on closed circuit, was in attendance at the very first SummerSlam, and now share a love of the squared-circle with my daughter Meghan. My love of wrestling/sports entertainment has been a constant for most of my life, as has WrestleMania. So I am SUPER excited this year since I will actually be going to my very first live Mania show at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It will be bittersweet because Meghan won’t be there with me (UGH!) but I am still looking forward to going.

Just not as much as if she was going with me. But anyway, as a fan, one of the coolest things that goes along with WrestleMania weekend is that there is always something going on that is wrestling-related. And tonight I got to enjoy part of that as me, my daughter Meg, my fellow Calling All Nerds compadres Jesse and Cody, and a great group of family and friends, attended a Pro Wrestling Syndicate show in Metuchen, New Jersey. Definitely not your typical “indy” show, PWS draws roughly 2,000 fans a month. They also blend a talented group of up and coming local talent with some great legends that sign autographs, take pictures, and sometimes even end up in the ring. Tonight we got to meet names like Bret Hart (one of my all time favorites), John Morrison (Meghan could not stop giggling and swooning), Jake the Snake Roberts….

….(who is on a pretty amazing journey of his own right now, and former WWE diva Lita (who is as beautiful today as she was on my TV during the Attitude Era). It is affordable and fun for the whole family…..definitely check them out on Facebook or at www.prowrestlingsyndicate.com if you’re looking for something new to do. The only tough part about tonight was not allowing myself to be tempted to eat something terrible. Shows like this feature everything from pizza and hot dogs to pretzels, candy and sausage sandwiches. I was lucky to wrangle myself a turkey sandwich and a banana (who would have guessed?). So while everything that smelled really good was bad…..I still managed to be good. Hope that last sentence wasn’t too confusing  I have to tell you….not my best week by a longshot. I am truly glad to see it gone. But…tonight was a good start to leaving the bad behind and stepping forward to a better day.

Until tomorrow!
