A Life Worth Weighting For - September 24th, 2013

“Money is the most envied, but the least enjoyed. Health is the most enjoyed,
but the least envied.”
- Charles Caleb Colton
One of my favorite things to do on a Sunday is sit in front of my TV and watch football. I am a huge fan of the NFL and I could spend the entire day watching the two worst teams in the league go at it. That can translate into a LOT of sitting around doing nothing though. And I’m sure that other sports fans out there will tell you that while you’re just sitting there, more often than not you’re not making the best choices with what your eating or drinking either. So a few years ago, my trainer and friend Jonathan Baltzer gave me some words of wisdom. He said to be sure you get in a good workout before you sit yourself down for the day. Actually, what he told me was to make sure I am out of breath before I turn that TV on. Earn yourself the right to sit around all day doing nothing while you watch other people run around. Lol. He also said something that I found to be pretty cool.
Jonathan is as big a football fan as I am. And he believed that the harder you workout on game day, the better your team will play. Sort of an inspirational thing ya know? He would say “you work hard for your team and your team will work hard for you.” You might roll your eyes at that, but I have to say, my team has won a lot more than they have lost on the Sundays that I have worked out since then. At the very least you get a good solid workout in to start your Sunday. So even if your team loses you can still feel good about yourself. Okay, so the new NFL season started three weeks ago. In week one I got up early on Sunday and went for a jog. Nothing fancy, just a mile or so up and down the avenue outside my house. Came back feeling good. Made a healthy breakfast, showered and dressed, took my daughter to church, and came back home at a little after 12 ready for some football.
Unfortunately, my Steelers lost, 16-9. The following week the Steelers faced off with their division rival Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. Obviously a run alone wasn’t enough, so this time I went for a mile and a HALF jog, and followed it up with a mixture of sit-ups and push-ups. The Steelers lose again, 20-10. So now my team is 0-2. Not a good way to start the season. Going into this past weekend they were facing a tough Chicago Bears team at home on Sunday Night Football. I reeeeeeaaaallly wanted them to win, so this time I went all out. Started my night off with a two mile jog, then got down on the floor for a circuit of 100 push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, and leg extensions. Pulled on my #36 Jerome Bettis jersey when I was done and flopped on my couch for some Steelers football. At halftime my team was down 24-10. AAARRRRGGGGH!
So I popped off the couch and picked up some weights. I banged out 300 reps right there in front of the TV. Very light weight mind you, but 300 reps just the same. Bicep curls, bench press, shoulder presses, back pull downs…anything I could think of. Fell onto the couch sore and sweaty at the end of the third quarter and the Steelers had cut their deficit to 27-23. FINALLY things were going their way, and mine. Sadly, they fell apart in the 4th quarter yet again and lost 40-23. Listen, there is only so much I can do as a fan. At some point these guys are going to have to get a win on their own. So my team drops to 0-3 for the first time I can ever remember. I sat there on the couch in my man cave, with my Steeler jersey on, surrounded by Steeler memorabilia, feeling totally dejected. The one positive is that my arms hurt too much to throw anything at my TV.
Until we meet again.
Little steps lead to big changes…
