A Life Worth Weighting For - August 24th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
“It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.”
- Vince Lombardi
I come from a long line of party people. Just thought you should know that about me. My family, and for that matter my friends too, have always been ready to throw the biggest, loudest, longest party of the year for just about any and all occasions. Some of them are totally valid. Some are a little bit questionable. But hey, it’s never boring. Anyway, tonight was a party for a totally valid reason if you ask me. And the reason why we all gathered from near and far on this beautiful summer night in Queens was to celebrate my brother’s milestone birthday. John Paul “Ned” McDermott is set to hit the 4-0 mark on August 28th. We will celebrate then again I am sure. That’s how my family rolls….lol. But like Rod Stewart says, “Tonight’s the Night.” And that it was.
About 60 – 65 of us gathered together at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Queens Blvd in Woodside, Queens. I always loved parties like that, but I have to say that I find myself appreciating them even more now as I have gotten a little older. It seems as time marches on you start to see people less at celebrations and more at wakes and funerals. So whenever we do have a chance to gather for the right reasons it is definitely something special. Tonight was really cool. Lots of family and friends, both old and new. Luckily Meghan had a few kids to run around with too. And most important of all, as much as the alcohol was flowin, nobody got out of hand. Ya just never know. Like I said, we’re not boring.
I am also happy to report that I avoided the food table like the plague. Ha ha ha ha. We had a big buffet featuring chicken marsala, baked ziti, sausage & peppers, and pot roast with potatoes. I stuck with the salad and one piece of chicken to go along with it. Cake was never really my thing, so that isn’t even a temptation for me at all. So all in all, a good time was had by all, and I would give Ned’s 40th a HUGE thumbs up. Thanks so much to everyone who came out to share in such a special occasion with us. Thanks to my sister Christine, and my closest friends Donna and Charlie for splitting the bill with me. And a quick shout out to the people who are no longer with us in body, but we know you were all there in spirit. Matt, Belinda, Shannon, Uncle Michael, Marty, K.R., and last but never least…Janie. Still love you guys every day.
Until tomorrow!
