A Life Worth Weighting For - August 1st, 2013 by Donald McDermott

The days you want to do it the least are the days you need to do it the most.

Okay, so this right here is how quickly things can change. You lose your focus for what seems like a second…you let life get in the way…and the next thing you know it’s more than a month later and you are wondering where the time went. That pretty much sums me up in a nutshell at the moment. It wasn’t even anything THAT terrible that was happening either. But one bad day here…one bit of bad news there…and in one fell swoop I lost my focus, my motivation, and even started to put back on a few pounds. Ugh. Part of me wanted to go back and even write blogs for as many of the days as I could remember over the past few weeks. No reason to do that though. I will however, do a quick rundown of the high points just to catch you up. Over the past 4 or 5 weeks I’ve dealt with the usual mix of friends, family, work and bills.

A lonely 4th of July holiday, a much-needed last minute road trip to Ohio, the joy of having my heart torn out for the second time, and watched my daughter go on her first vacation without me. I said goodbye to an old friend (R.I.P. KR), enjoyed my annual softball classic, saw my mom get really sick, hosted a really cool group of friends from California, and got to take my daughter to her very first Yankees game. I think that about sums it up…for the most part anyway. So rather than beat myself up about what I “shoulda” done or “coulda” done, I am choosing to move forward instead of backward. What’s done is done….and what wasn’t done wasn’t done. It is the first of a brand new month today. That means it’s time for a brand new start and a brand new outlook.

I woke up this morning and promised myself that I would get the car back on track again. So far so good today too. Woke up feeling good, ready to get moving again. I also went back to basics. Counting calories, journaling what I eat, drinking more water, and of course: exercise, exercise, EXERCISE. One of my favorite uncles once told me that it doesn’t matter if you fall off your course from time to time…as long as you get right back on. My one-time trainer and all the time friend Jonathan used to remind me all the time that “Ali didn’t become the greatest until the first time he had to get up off the canvas.” Sounds good to me. There can be no great successes without a few failures from time to time. I will keep pushing and keep trying. Trust me when I tell you….I will become the man that I always knew I should be. And it will happen sooner than later.

Until tomorrow!
