A Life Worth Weighting For - June 23rd, 2013 by Donald McDermott

Here is a little something I meant to say yesterday. Meg and I went to my cousin’s wedding party last night in Queens. It was LOADED from top to bottom with some truly amazing looking foods. Lots of pastas, potatoes, breads and other deliciously prepared carbs. Plenty of chicken in a variety of sauces that smelled incredible. All of my favorites (the old me anyway). Not to mention TWO wedding cakes that I had to physically hold my daughter back from. Lol. But even with all of those devilishly tempting treats to choose from, Meghan and I were both good. Much to her dismay. Ha ha ha. I knew that it being a party, there was going to be a LOT of great food that I was probably better off passing on. So I made sure that Meg and I ate before we got there. Roasted chicken if you must know. Pretty much my go-to meal. For lunch we settled on turkey wraps and smoothies from the Tropical Smoothie Café. Not sure if they have those places near you…but I am sure glad they are out by us.

Anyway, that was yesterday. Let’s move on to today, shall we? Seems like I have been down in Queens a LOT lately…and today was no exception. Hooked up with my brother and some good friends for brunch at Cronins. It wasn’t the full group we were supposed to be with, but we still had a lot of laughs together. Nowadays that is always a good thing. I had a “California Turkey Burger” with a side salad. Basically it was a turkey burger with avocado, lettuce, tomato and salsa (passed on the bun). It was a little dry, but yummy….highly recommend. When all was said and done, I took a quick little ride down to Astoria Park, fully intending to bang out my last four miles of the week. Let me tell you though, this was the hardest day for me so far. The sun was strong and HOT. Right over my head. ZERO shade on the track at A.P. By the time I got my three miles done I was SHOT. Felt like I was going to pass out. Sooooo, rather than quit altogether (not that three miles is quitting mind you), I walked one lap slowly, just to get my bearings back (each lap is a ¼ mile by the way).

Then I forced myself to run my last four laps. I took it super slow. Didn’t have much of a choice. It was easily the hardest mile I have ever run. But I did it. I also got my four miles in for the day, rather than just settle for three. Which I think would have been more than enough for anyone else. When I was done, I shakily walked over to the nearest hot dog vendor, bought two bottles of water, and poured the first one right over my head. I would not be surprised if steam came off me when I did it. Fell into the front seat of my car, cranked up the a.c. and drove right back to Long Island. I gotta tell ya, my original plan was to get my four miles in and then work out at home while the HBO series True Blood was on in the background. But I am WIPED OUT. That sun took everything out of me. My back is sore, my legs are cramped and my head hurts. Nothing like getting healthier, huh? Lol. Oh yeah….note to self…if you are going to jog four slow miles in the summer heat…and you’re bald, remember your sunscreen. OUCH!

Until tomorrow!
