A Life Worth Weighting For - June 22nd, 2013 by Donald McDermott
“ A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.”
- George Bernard Shaw
As a parent there is nothing that makes me happier than seeing my daughter happy. Today was definitely one of those days. Meg was with her mom on Friday night this week, so I woke up bright and early this morning and went for my daily run. The sun is getting stronger now and those three and four mile jogs are getting tougher and tougher. I kept my head down, my ipod on, and just powered through to the end. So I got in my three miles for the day, putting me at twenty so far for the week. I went to four miles on Monday and Thursday. Plan to do it again tomorrow. Every little notch that I can crank things up will help me get to my goal that much faster. After my run, I took the world’s longest shower, shaved, had a little something to eat, and headed over to pick Meggy up and start our day together.
One of Meghan’s good friends is leaving on Monday for the whole summer. So we got together with Meg’s friend and her family, as well as another family and their kids for a great summer Saturday together. It’s funny how your priorities and values change all on their own when you’re a parent. Especially as you get older. Nowadays it makes me really happy to see Meghan happily playing with other kids. If you had asked me ten, fifteen or twenty years ago what it was that made me happiest I am sure my answer not only would have been different…but it probably would have left you shaking your head. I wasn’t always a boy scout you know. Lol.
After our goodbyes were said, Meghan and I hopped back in my somewhat rusty but always trusty white mini-van and headed towards my old Queens stomping grounds. My cousin Meghan (the original – lol) got married a few weeks back. Her reception/party/celebration was tonight in Woodside. Meggy and I didn’t stay too long, but we wanted to make an appearance. Had to represent the family. Plus, we both genuniely love our cousin and are happy for her as she enters this exciting new chapter in her life. I know she is going to be a great wife and mom. Congrats again and good luck. So after a day of driving, hanging out and having fun, my little girl is sleeping soundly. I am soon to follow. It has been a long day and I am beat. Hope you all had a good Saturday out there.
Until tomorrow!
