A Life Worth Weighting For - June 21st, 2013 by Donald McDermott

It’s official! As of this fall I will be the proud father of a fifth grader. I know, I know, you’re saying to yourself “you don’t look nearly old enough to have a child in fifth grade.” I appreciate that…and I agree with you….but it’s true. Today was Meghan’s last day of school in the fourth grade. Got up bright and early and made my baby some pancakes with sliced bananas and peaches to celebrate the end of the school year. Even though it was only a half-day, she insisted on getting all dolled up. She looked so cute in a mint green dress with a little white shawl kinda deal over her shoulders. Her blonde hair was brushed back and her blue eyes were POPPIN!

I am gonna be in soooooo much trouble when boys start realizing what I am seeing in her already. But for today I got to put all of those future woes aside and just enjoy the moment. After dropping Meghan off at school I headed back to the homestead and decided to get my daily run out of the way early. Yesterday was four miles, so thankfully I only had to run three today. Also thankfully, from doing it every single day I find that I am getting it done a little faster now too. From time to time there is a woman I see out walking while I am out jogging. Today she happened to be coming at me while I was jogging in the other direction. As we passed each other she asked me how many miles I was doing.

Without stopping I smiled and put up three fingers. She said “good for you” and gave me a quick thumbs up. I actually like little moments like that. Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference. Even if it is just a stranger that acknowledges your effort. This was a rare Friday where Meghan was with her mom. So I tried to make the most of the time on my own. I baked teryaki chicken and vegetables for dinner. Went down to the man cave for a quick workout while I caught up on last night’s episode of Burn Notice (such a good show). And then I actually got a little writing done on the computer. That is what I life to call a productive day all around. Hoping for a lot more of those this summer too.

Until tomorrow!
