A Life Worth Weighting For - June 15th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
“Life isn’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and
keep getting up.”
- Rocky Balboa
Today was cool. To quote Forrest Gump, “that’s all I have to say about that.” It just was. And why you ask? How nice of you to do so. Started the day like any other. Kept the morning nice and simple for me and the Meg-monster. Made cereal with yogurt and fresh fruit on the side for breakfast. Then I went out for my run, just to get it out of the way. Cruised to the 3-mile mark nice and easy. Definitely thinking of cranking things up next week. After showering, getting dressed and helping Meggy get herself presentable, the two of us headed to our first stop of the day…Queens. We swung by to see my mom for a little while and to give my dad his gifts for Father’s Day, since he works on Sunday and I didn’t think we would get the chance this year.
At the mall the night before, I picked him up a Paul McCartney CD in honor of us going to the concert the week before. I also found him a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young Concert Poster too. One of his favorite bands of all time. He showed as much enthusiasm as always…but I think he liked it…lol. After kissing mom goodbye, Meg and I drove dad to work out at Kennedy Airport. Then we hopped on the Belt Parkway and headed for the Verrazano. We were on our way out to Jersey to spend the afternoon with my sister. Me and the girls went to lunch, went for ice cream after, and did a little shopping for Meg’s summer clothes. Had a great time. Love keeping the family together….especially since I don’t get as much time with Meghan as I used to these days.
On the way home from Jersey, Meg and I got a call from a friend who was having a birthday party for her daughter out in Long Island…and would we like to come? So of course the world travelers that we are this weekend….we headed over there. I love everything about my daughter, lock, stock and barrel. But two of the things that always stand out with me are (1) her ability to be flexible and just kind of go with the flow, and (2) the fact that she never minds being in the car. She is WAY better company than the little stuffed monkey that sits on my dashboard. No offense Frank (that’s his name). We got home around midnight after a long day with a LOT of driving and a LOT of fun. For the second night in a row, Meggy was out cold before she hit the pillow. There was a smile on her face though, so all the traveling was definitely worth it.
Until tomorrow!
