A Life Worth Weighting For - June 2nd, 2013 by Donald McDermott

               - You will never know your limits until you push yourself to them

Today was a pretty cool day all around. Partially because it was kinda the start of my birthday celebrating. See in my family, we don’t just celebrate for one day….that would be silly. If you do it right, you can party for a few days…even a week. My daughter Meghan tries pretty hard to turn the entire 10th month of the year into Meg-tober. I have to admit it has a pretty nice ring to it. Anyway. Started off my Sunday the way it always goes….in church with Meghan. When services were over for the morning….we hopped on the L.I.E. and headed for brunch at Cronins for my birthday. It’s actually this coming Tuesday, but today was more convenient for everyone. So a few of my closest family and friends gathered in my honor….which was really cool. Nuthin’ fancy at all…but I always feel really good when we are all together…even after all of these years.

After brunch and the appropriate number of hugs, kisses, back-pats and secret handshakes (yes, my brother and I have one, and no I won’t tell you what it is – lol)….Meghan and I drove my dad to work and then headed back to Long Island. Today is Meg’s day with her mom usually, but we agreed that we would each get Meghan on our birthdays, no matter what day it falls on. Dropped Meg off with her mom just in time for her to go to another birthday party (the kid LOVES to party – totally a McDermott). As for me, I got to turn right around and head BACK to Queens again. I know it sounds crazy, but I wanted to be with Meghan so you do what you have to do. This time instead of stopping in Astoria, I drove all the way down to Astoria Park….right on the water on the other side of Manhattan. I did my final run of the week there last Sunday and thought I might as well do it again.

A change of scenery once in awhile isn’t a bad thing. And speaking of scenery….I am used to just running the avenue outside my house every day….which doesn’t bring a whole lot of surprises usually. But in case anyone was wondering where the really cute girls are on a Sunday…..you can find them on the track at Astoria Park. WOW….I think that Sundays on the track at A.P. are going to become a weekly ritual for me now. Anyway, I cranked out three miles….did a quick change in the back of my van in the parking lot (we do what we have to)….and then headed out to Forest Hills to pick up my trusty sidekick Cody. The two of us headed into the city together and brought PARENTGUIDE magazine to the masses. Finally got in at around 4am. YAAAAWWWWN….long day….long weekend. Hope yours was a good and productive one. If you need me in the next few hours….I’ll be asleep.

Until tomorrow!
