A Life Worth Weighting For - May 31st, 2013 by Donald McDermott

" I am what I am today because of the choices I made yesterday."

                                                                           - Eleanor Roosevelt

Right at this moment I am about as relaxed as anyone can be. I am sitting in my home office in front of the computer. Big, baggy, comfy t-shirt and shorts. The fan blowing on me, Meghan snoring softly just a few rooms away. “Best of My Love” by The Eagles (one of my all time favorite songs) is coming through the computer speakers from my itunes playlist. Like I said, I’m good and relaxed. Lookin’ back on a pretty good Friday that was. Started the day like I have started all of my days this week…with my 3-mile run. I did it yesterday in the hot, thick 90-degree air and lived to tell the tale. So doing it again today should have been a snap, right? I wish…for some reason today seemed a LOT more difficult. Really don’t know why. I will admit that it was the first time that I almost let the voices in. The ones that are always trying to get my to give up and quit this new journey of mine. The ones that were whispering “it’s really hot out today, what you’ve done so far is more than enough. You might as well just stop now.”

I have to say it was pretty tempting, especially at the two mile mark when it just seemed like it was NEVER going to end. And if that wasn’t enough…and I absolutely SWEAR that this happened to me…about halfway through my jog today, a car pulls up along side of me. I SWEAR I am not making this up. It trailed me for a few feet…staying right next to me…which makes me feel creepy in general. I tried to just ignore it. No matter what the motivation was, there is an insecure part of me that still automatically assumes it is just some idiot who wants to see the how funny the fat kid looks when he runs. I’m working on that part of me by the way. Anyway, a few seconds go by….I keep on jogging….he stays RIGHT next to me….cruisin along slowly. Finally, his window comes down, because he has his a.c. on….and there is an older guy sitting there looking at me. I don’t stop jogging….he doesn’t stop cruisin. He simply says “does it help?” And the only reply I could come up with was, “it doesn’t hurt.”

And he said “okay, I might start doing that myself.” And then his window rolled up, he pressured down on the gas and was gone. Like it had never happened…too weird. Well despite the heat, the destructive voices in my head and weird older guys in air-conditioned cars, I didn’t stop. I kept on going and got my 3 miles in for today. That brings me to 15 for the week with two days left…pretty cool. After the world’s longest shower and tallest glass of Iced-T, I went to pick my girl Meggy up from school this afternoon. We spent a little time at the Brookhaven Fair (LOVE riding rides with her…the kid is FEARLESS). Then we went out to have dinner with some friends and their two adorable kids. Finally got back home at almost 11pm. After a full day, Megs was pretty much sound asleep before her little blonde head hit the pillow. I like the way the kid thinks. And after what was also a full day for me…I think I am going to follow her lead and crash out myself. Hope you’re havin’ a good start to your weekend.

Until tomorrow!
