A Life Worth Weighting For - May 30th, 2013 by Donald McDermott
- Some days you get the bear. Other days the bear gets you.
Hooooo-boy. It’s official…the heat is here. When this week first started I upped the ante on my daily jogs. I increased the total number of miles for the week from 18 to 21. Three more miles for the entire week doesn’t seem like THAT big a deal, right? When you think about it, it’s really only a jump from jogging 2.5 a day to jogging 3 miles a day. How hard could that be? Yeah yeah yeah…I always have to ask. Let me tell you from four days of experience now. An extra half mile a day makes a WHOLE lotta difference. Especially when it is 90 degrees out, the sun is beating down on top of your unprotected head, and the air is so thick that you wish you were carrying a machete to help cut your way through it.
A long time ago, my one-time trainer and all-the-time friend Jonathan taught me that the days when it seems the hardest are the ones you should be doing it the most. The cold, the rain, the heat, it doesn’t matter. Your body doesn’t know what the conditions are like outside…it only knows that it needs to be exercised. Plus, it is on days like today when you see who is REALLY dedicated to their cause. I saw one other person jogging this morning...one. Heard a LOT of air conditioners rumbling, but only one other jogger (she was way cuter than me by the way – lol). But I did head out and get my miles in for the day. And ya know what? It really wasn’t so bad.
You just have to keep moving forward and tell yourself that it will be over soon…as long as you keep on going. I had a random stranger stop mowing his lawn to ask me if I needed water. I couldn’t decide if he offered because he was impressed…or because I looked like I was struggling that much. Either way I thought it was a nice gesture. I also think I am stronger for enduring the heat today. Got back to the house totally soaked and dyyyyying for a shower and a few minutes in front of my fan. I am now at 12 miles for the week, which leaves me with 9 more to go in three days. I am excited to hit the mark once again. And now, feeling rested and refreshed, I am headed over to pick up my little girl.
Tonight is a daddy-meggy night….one of the best kind of nights ever!
Until tomorrow!
