A Life Worth Weighting For - Day One by Donald McDermott
February 18th, 2013
I have been here before you know. Almost three years ago exactly, I came to the conclusion that things had to change. I weighed close to 350 pounds then. It was NOT a pretty sight. Trust me, it was even harder living it. So with the help of a great trainer and greater friend, I embraced the idea that with hard work I could change my life. I set goals for myself, exercised as often as humanly possible, counted calories, ate healthier (my motto became “if it’s fried, it’s denied), weighed myself once a week, and recorded the results. I also started a daily online blog to help keep me honest the whole way through.
And what do you know…it worked! Between February and October of 2009 I lost just over 100 pounds and felt better and more accomplished than I ever had in my life. Little did I realize that my journey was far from over, unfortunately. In the time since then I have hit some great highs and some terrible lows, culminating with the year that we just left behind. For me 2012 was loaded with money troubles, family problems, uncertainty at work, and the beginnings of a bitter divorce that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I also noticed that I started eating more, sleeping less, exercising less, and showing little regard for my health in general.
But you know what? I’m not complaining. There are a lot of people out there who have it worse than I do. What I am doing, is taking action…again. The difference this time around is that I don’t have quite as much to lose…and I already know the formula to get where I want to be. My first weight loss journey began on Monday, February 15th, 2009. Since today is Monday, February 18th, I figured it was as good a time as any to get started. A brand new year, but the same old story for me. I hope you will check in with me from time to time as I change my eating habits, start sweating again for the RIGHT reasons, set (and achieve) personal challenges and goals, and record all of my successes and failures right here for everyone to see.
