A Life Worth Weighting For - April 23rd, 2013 by Donald McDermott

Okay, so maybe these weren’t the droids that I have been looking for (Star Wars reference – it IS called calling all NERDS after all). But this definitely WAS the kind of day that I have been looking for. That is because it was one of those rarest of days where everything just sort of came together for me. Productive at work, smart at the table for all three meals, and kicked it up a notch with the workout too. Started my night off with a nice, leisurely two-mile jog. Always feels good to pass that two mile mark for me personally. Good night for a run too. From there I headed down to the comfort of my man cave where I got in a good, solid workout while catching up on the latest episodes of two of my favorites….

….NCIS and Game of Thrones (both really good episodes by the way). I actually didn’t have my cards on me (shock!), so instead I took four random exercises (sit-ups, push-ups, leg extensions and squats) and I did each one of those 25 times, for four sets. That was a hundred of each one in total for anyone reading this that might be a wee bit mathematically challenged. After the run and all four sets I was definitely sweating…but I have been wanting to challenge myself just a little bit more for a while now. So for the very first time in all of these sixty four posts, I decided to add weights to my routine. Very low weights….lots and lots of reps. I did what my dear old trainer Jonathan would have called, a circuit.

A variety of movements designed to hit multiple muscle groups. I generally do 20 reps in each set…3-4 sets for each exercise. I can’t stress enough here that I was using seriously low weight. It was my first time back using weights in far too long. So for me it was much more about the movement than the mass (I hope you liked that analogy…I came up with it just for you). When all was said and done I had clocked in just a hair over 300 reps. Not a bad night’s work if I do say so myself. I’ll probably be sore galore tomorrow morning. But it was definitely worth it…also, there’s nothing wrong with a little pain…as long as it’s for the right reason. And that’s it for me for another day. Getting ready to put my weary old bones to bed for some hard earned and much needed sleep.

Hope your day was as productive and as satisfying as mine 

Until tomorrow!
