When I first started doing this nostalgic little column of mine, the idea was to focus on movies from the 1980’s that you might not have heard of. Let’s face it, everyone has seen  or at least heard of Batman, Gremlins and E.T. at this point. What I wanted to do was introduce people to movies from the decade that helped mold me that weren’t QUITE in the mainstream. Now going by those guidelines it might seem a little weird that I chose to focus on Return of the Jedi for my latest stroll down movie memory lane. Well the method to my madness is because Episode 6 in the classic Star Wars series was officially released in theaters on May 25, 1983. So we’re not just having a flashback this time. We’re celebrating a 30th anniversary. Definitely hard to fathom that it has been that long. Especially since I saw it in the movies. In fact, as much as I hate to date myself, I saw ALL of the Star Wars movies in the theaters. That includes the one that started it all way back in 1977. Can I really be that old? Yeah, unfortunately I can.

At the time of its release three decades ago, the Star Wars franchise was still just a trilogy. It was also the greatest of any trilogy if you ask me. I was only 11 years old when my brother, my sister and I sat down in a little theater in New Jersey to watch the movie that at that time EVERYONE was chomping at the bit to see. Looking back, the thing that stood out to me the most, aside from the super cool special effects, is that it ties up all loose ends before it is over. I don’t know about you, but I don’t go to the movies so that I can leave with things to “ponder” or work out for myself. Wrap it up for me please. I have enough to deal with in my life. Yes, even at 11. So for those of you who don’t know, or don’t quite remember, Jedi brings us the final “good vs. evil” battle between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. The movie starts with all of our heroes coming together to free Han Solo from his carbonite prison and rescue him from the slimy clutches of Jabba the Hutt. Still a really cool scene today.

As the movie rolls on, we get to see Luke become a full fledged Jedi, find out that Leia is his twin sister, and confront Darth Vader in one last attempt to bring his father back from the dark side of the force. The film also brings the death of Yoda, a cameo by Obi-Wan Kenobi, and last but certainly never least, one of the most famous images ever caught on film…Princess Leia chained up in the gold bikini. You can try to deny it if you want. But if you were in the middle of puberty when that movie came out I guarantee you there is still a little Princess Leia fantasy stuck somewhere in the back of your mind. Oh yeah, let’s not forget all those adorable little Ewoks too. Lol. And since there is a 16-year gap between Return of the Jedi (episode 6) and The Phantom Menace (episode 1), I still tend to think of it as two trilogies as opposed to one six-part series. How you feel about it is up to you. One thing is for sure though. Return of the Jedi has earned its place in cinema history.

Thirty years later…and forever.

80s Flashback Road Trip - Return of the Jedi

by Donald McDermott

As a child of the gnarly, fresh, dope, totally tubular period in time known as the 1980’s, I have grown into adulthood with a genuine love and appreciation for the decade whose movies helped shape me into the person I am today (for better or worse). So lace up your shell top Adidas, pull on your Kangol, grab your copy of the Necronomicon and hop into the nearest DeLorean for a trip back in time. Don’t forget to feed your pet Mogwai before you go…just not after midnight!
