I have been a fan of pro wrestling since I was a kid. So back in the winter of 1985 when I heard there was a movie about wrestling coming out called Vision Quest, I absolutely had to go see it. To my surprise, there were no Hulk Hogans or Rowdy Roddy Pipers to be found. That’s because the movie isn’t about “professional” wrestling at all. It’s about high school wrestling. Specifically, it’s about a high school senior named Louden Swain (played by Matthew Modine) who on the cusp of turning eighteen decides that he needs to do something meaningful with his life. Against the wishes of just about everyone around him, he embarks on a mission to drop two weight classes in order to challenge the toughest wrestler in the state.

That would be Brian Shute, a menacing 3-time state champion from a rival school who has never been defeated in his high school career. It’s basically a coming of age story (which I am total sucker for) that follows the steps a person is willing to take to get to where they want to be. And just like in any good story from the 80’s, there is a romantic aspect to Vision Quest as well. Louden’s father takes on a boarder named Carla (Linda Fiorentino in one of her earliest roles) who is passing through town on her way to San Francisco. Though she is older, Louden falls in love right away and begins to lose sight of his goals as a wrestler. Even worse, his drastic weight loss leads to a few health issues that could also effect his ability to compete.

Can Louden overcome his obstacles and make weight before the big match against Shute? Can he still compete at the level he needs to win even after dropping so much weight? Will he get the girl in the end? I hope you’re not looking for me to tell you. That would spoil everything. You’ll just have to check out Vision Quest for yourself. Think of it as your own little life journey. Oh yeah, and if all of the wrestling action and high school drama wasn’t enough, the movie also has a pretty good 80’s soundtrack, which includes Madonna’s hit Crazy For You. To date, one of my all time favorite sappy love songs. Safe to say that aside from a few car crashes and explosions, Vision Quest pretty much has it all.

80s Flashback Road Trip - Vision Quest

by Donald McDermott

As a child of the gnarly, fresh, dope, totally tubular period in time known as the 1980’s, I have grown into adulthood with a genuine love and appreciation for the decade whose movies helped shape me into the person I am today (for better or worse). So lace up your shell top Adidas, pull on your Kangol, grab your copy of the Necronomicon and hop into the nearest DeLorean for a trip back in time. Don’t forget to feed your pet Mogwai before you go…just not after midnight!
